If so, the clearly clipped hatchery fish can be harvested (hatchery fish have their adipose fin removed when they’re juveniles), and the wild fish released without harm. Their plan was to conduct a post-release survival study to evaluate catchment, mortality, and operations to ultimately determine if responsibly used pound nets might act as an alternative to commercial gear and harvest techniques. In the case of the WFC study, the focus was “efficient hatchery harvest and significant reductions in by-catch mortality.” It was anticipated that retained fish would meet quality standards, and by-catch be released unharmed. This means targeted fish can be taken, while by-catch can be released without ever even leaving the water. Here they receive little to no air exposure, human handling, or over-crowding - factors known to elevate plasma lactate and cortisol concentrations in fish. Whereas most commercial fishing practices entangle fish in their teeth or gills, which often results in injury or death, pound nets simply house the fish, where they swim freely until ready for harvest. Pound nets emit zero carbon, require little maintenance, and are more gentle on the fish. The inner cage holds small bait effectively and allows baitfish to be lured into the trap. The trap has 4 x 1.25 openings and is built for both freshwater and saltwater. The mesh is corrosion-resistant and tested to last many years of repeated use. The trap’s efficiency was all too much at a time when few, if any, regulations were in place.Īll odds seemed to be in favour of the revival. The Frabill Minnow Trap is made out of heavy-duty vinyl dipped steel. From there, an accumulation of political pressure, poor fishing, and disastrous storms resulted in the industry going under by the early 1950’s. As gill-netters dug their heels into the issue, Washington State banned pound net operations in 1934. Gill-netters saw the traps as a way for canneries to reap the reward with minimal labour costs, and the public was outraged by rapidly declining fish numbers. But the impressive success of the traps eventually became the downfall of the industry. Fish were left in the water without over-handling, entanglement, or air exposure - meaning their quality was topnotch. Traps in Puget Sound and Alaska were some of the biggest producers, with a single trap able to capture up to 1.2 million salmon in a season. ![]() For over a century, they proved to be incredibly successful trapping fish in abundance - perhaps too successful. In the Pacific Northwest, pound nets were first used on the Columbia River. The method was introduced to Great Lake fisheries in the late 1830’s, and by the 1850’s it was popular across the country.

![]() The last known beast-hunt at the Circus Maximus took place in 523, and the last known races there were held by Totila in 549. With the advent of Christianity as the official religion of the Empire, ludi gradually fell out of favour. Įven at the height of its development as a chariot-racing circuit, the circus remained the most suitable space in Rome for religious processions on a grand scale and was the most popular venue for large-scale venationes in the late 3rd century, the emperor Probus laid on a spectacular Circus show in which beasts were hunted through a veritable forest of trees, on a specially built stage. Eventually, 135 days of the year were devoted to ludi. By the late 1st century AD, the Colosseum had been built to host most of the city's gladiator shows and smaller beast-hunts, and most track-athletes competed at the purpose-designed Stadium of Domitian, though long-distance foot races were still held at the Circus. Over the several centuries of its development, the Circus Maximus became Rome's paramount specialist venue for chariot races. Rome's emperors met the growing popular demand for regular ludi and the need for more specialised venues, as essential obligations of their office and cult. View of the Circus site from the south-east in 2019 a colourful crowded disreputable area" frequented by "prostitutes, jugglers, fortune tellers and low-class performing artists." When no games were being held, the Circus at the time of Catullus (mid-1st century BC) was probably "a dusty open space with shops and booths. Beneath the outer stands, next to the Circus' multiple entrances, were workshops and shops. Otherwise, it would have made a convenient corral for the animals traded in the nearby Forum Boarium, just outside the starting gate. On many other days, charioteers and jockeys would need to practise on its track. By the late Republic, ludi were held on 57 days of the year an unknown number of these would have required full use of the Circus. Īs Rome's provinces expanded, existing ludi were embellished and new ludi invented by politicians who competed for divine and popular support. ![]() A venatio held there in 169 BC, one of several in the 2nd century, employed "63 leopards and 40 bears and elephants", with spectators presumably kept safe by a substantial barrier. Others were enlarged at enormous expense to fit the entire space. In 167 BC, "flute players, scenic artists and dancers" performed on a temporary stage, probably erected between the two central seating banks. ![]() Some Circus events, however, seem to have been relatively small and intimate affairs. The most costly and complex of the ludi offered opportunities to assess an aedile's competence, generosity, and fitness for higher office. ĭuring the Roman Republic, the aediles organized the games. The greater ludi (meaning sport or game in Latin ) at the Circus began with a flamboyant parade ( pompa circensis), much like the triumphal procession, which marked the purpose of the games and introduced the participants. Ludi ranged in duration and scope from one-day or even half-day events to spectacular multi-venue celebrations held over several days, with religious ceremonies and public feasts, horse and chariot racing, athletics, plays and recitals, beast-hunts and gladiator fights. In Roman tradition, the earliest triumphal ludi at the Circus were vowed by Tarquin the Proud to Jupiter in the late Regal era for his victory over Pometia. Others might be given to fulfil a religious vow, such as the games in celebration of a triumph. Most were held annually or at annual intervals on the Roman calendar. Ludi were sponsored by leading Romans or the Roman state for the benefit of the Roman people ( populus Romanus) and gods. The Circus was Rome's largest venue for ludi, public games connected to Roman religious festivals. The Circus lies between the Aventine (left) and Palatine (right) the oval structure to the far right is the Colosseum. Mrs. ![]() On this rough section, the Neuron was quite uncomfortable to ride and an inexperienced rider might find its vibration quite hard to handle. Its colour and texture match the wide median strip of Anzac Parade that runs all the way from this point to the War Memorial so that everything looks uniform and monumental in tourist photos. This section is covered with a very coarse, rough red asphalt. My turnaround and photography point for each ride was the ceremonial centre-line of Canberra, which directly runs through the peak of Mount Ainslee, and the centres of the War Memorial, Old Parliament House and New Parliament House. Its very beefy front fork has no flex whatsoever. Both encourage you to take up a longer term hire or subscription package to save money per ride.Īs a safety feature, the Neuron defaults to 15 kph maximum and you have to press the Toggle Speed button to go to 25 kph, provided the geo-restricting system allows it depending upon your location. Both the scooter systems are expensive if you hire them casually as I did. The first scooter I tried was the bright orange Neuron. Neuron You can see how steep the Neuron’s head tube is and how the fat fork blades offer no rake or other form of vertical compliance. They’re also brilliant the moment the road or path starts sloping upwards. E-bikes overcome the necessary heavyweight that all share bikes need to be to have the durability and abuse resistance required. I think that bike share schemes will need to become fully electric to keep up with the competition. It’s little wonder that scooter share worldwide has taken just two years to reach the same level of ridership that it took bike share 20 years to reach. This front light was not working.Īirbike was by far the cheapest option at $2.70, but the least enjoyable. The solar-powered headlight was not working and looked like it may have either leaked or shorted due to condensation entering the small solar panel. In fact, I’ve ridden several different airless tyre designs over the past 20 years and they seem to be improving because these were the best airless tyres that I’d ridden. The tyres themselves handled quite well, considering they’re airless. You can see where the front tyre was bulging off the rim, causing a bumpy ride. It turned out that the front wheel’s airless tyre was not seated into the rim properly in one section, causing a big bulge. Then I soon noticed a pronounced ‘bump, bump, bump’ when I was riding. I managed to fix that by bending the mudguard back into place with the sole of my shoe. At first, the front wheel would not rotate freely. Then there were mechanical condition issues. This grip was way too narrow, even for my skinny ‘office worker’ hands. That made riding this bike an uncomfortable, unenjoyable experience. So perhaps I’m slightly taller than average, but the maximum seat height was about 150mm (6 inches) too low for me. I’m 182 cm tall or exactly six feet in the old scale. It’s less than half the length it needs to be. There a bikes with even smaller wheels that comfortably accommodate tall adults, but the Airbike’s seatpost is equally vertically challenged. There’s nothing wrong with small wheels in themselves. ![]() Its proportions look about normal, but when you realise that those wheels are not 700c or even 26 inch, but 24 inch, you start to see how tiny this bike is. But the Airbike comes with some serious disadvantages. Normally you’d think that a bicycle is the best option for higher speed and longer distances when compared with a scooter. Of the tourists, it appeared like a 50% split between Neuron and Beam scooters being used, but I only saw one Airbike being ridden. But I suspect that most of the regular hirers use them in the city centre for short week-day commutes.ĭespite the 13 degree maximum temperature and overcast skies, there were plenty of tourists who were enjoying the same path along with lots of locals, mainly on road bikes, but some on scooters. ![]() Many scooter hires are for riding along this stretch. I rode all three options for a short, out and back ride on an identical route along the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin. There wasn’t any ice on the path at 2pm, but it regularly gets below zero overnight in Canberra during winter! On a chilly mid-winter’s afternoon, I took the opportunity to test ride all three of Canberra’s shared bike and scooter alternatives, Neuron, Beam and Airbike.Īirbike offers conventional, non-electric bicycles in a dockless share system. As we have previously written about, Canberra’s two competing scooter-share schemes are booming. It’s also one of the first places to legalise the riding of e-scooters. ![]() Canberra is widely considered to be the best cycling city in Australia. ![]() In the same way, Wondershare Dr.Fone works with many new and old iPhones, such as the iPhone XR, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and many more.
